Introducing Rory McKenna
Rory McKenna joined ACB Group in May 2022 as part of his work placement for college. He attends Sligo IT and is studying a BA Hons in Quantity Surveying. He is just after completing his third year, ready to commence his fourth and final year. Rory is a native of County Monaghan in Ireland.
Rory’s ACB Experience
When Rory began working with us, he was assigned a mentor to help guide him through his learnings with ACB Group.
Rory gained cost control experience working on mission-critical data centre projects. Rory has “learned a lot” from everyone in the office and his remote work colleagues through utilising MS Teams for team engagement. Rory’s previous experience with MS Teams has been for attending lectures and college activities.
Rory said he was “never stuck, the question is always explained” and he has been re-assured to keep asking questions.
To ensure his development objectives were achieved, Rory had weekly check-ins with ACB’s Commercial Manager and regular check-ins with Human Resources.
Rory also got the opportunity during his work placement with ACB to visit a project site in Berlin. Seeing a data centre in construction helped Rory learn the importance of the Quantity Surveyor role.
The hands-on experience came with learning “the BIM processes and the digital collaboration that that brings”. Rory learned how to make Purchase Orders (POs) and get them approved along with material orders consolidated in line with the project plan.
While working on this Berlin data centre, Rory also gained experience in using digital tools which make the processes “fast and efficient” such as:
- Sage
- Trello
- Airtable
- BIM360
- Cubit
Rory said he would “recommend ACB because of the support and practical learning I received and gained during my time here”.
